How to Handle Conflict in the Workplace
How to Handle Conflict in the WorkplaceHow to Handle Conflict in the WorkplaceConflicts in the workplace can occur for many reasons, but some of the top reasons for conflict are that people often have very different ideas and ways of approaching their job that everyone around them might not agree with. Each of us has learned very early on how to handle conflict. For some of us, that means knowing how to effectively communicate our desires and our needs in order to better understand the problem and how it relates to others but for some of us, it may be that we learned to handle conflict by being aggressive and not be willing to compromise which makes it difficult to come to any kind of a solution. When individuals feel threatened in any way, they may often resort to the flight or fight response to alleviate their stress. Unfortunately, neither of these responses is a good way to handle conflict because the root of the problem still remains and neither party feels any resolution. Where ver there are people living or working together, there are bound to be problems. The key to handling any type of conflict is to learn strategies where both people can feel heard. Establish Strong Professional Relationships From the Start One key way to avoiding conflict in the workplace is to take some time to establish good working relationships with your supervisor and your co-workers. Developing strong relationships in the workplace can help you to avoid much of the pettiness that can go on when people dont feel accepted as an important part of the group. Staying out of the line of fire when it comes to schreibstube politics can put you in a position to stay out of some of the negativity that can invade the workplace. Avoid office politics at all costs and make it a practice to stay away from office gossip as well. Participating in office gossip can put you in a bad light and cause your supervisor and coworkers to view you as someone who is unprofessional and perhaps a troub lemaker to boot. Conflict in the workplace can often be a good thing and something to embrace. Conflict can help get problems on the table and force both parties to take a stand on their beliefs and hopefully find a way that they can communicate on what they would both like to accomplish. Facing conflict early on also helps prevent bad feelings to fester while also providing an opportunity to move closer to a deeper understanding. Making Peace in the Workplace Usually, we make more out of conflict than we really need to do. It may be our partal pride that holds us back from being the first rolle to take the initiative to move closer to the other person but by just being the first one to take action, shows your willingness to create some good will. Focus on the Facts When trying to resolve a conflict with another person it is important that you stick just to the facts. It is quite possible that the two of you see things in a totally different way, which is usually why conflic t begins in the first place, but its very important for both parties to stay with what they see as the facts and not let emotions get in the way. Ask an Objective Third Party to Help You may find that the problem has gone on too long or that one or both of you has some very strong feelings on a particular issue so it can often times be helpful for both parties to sit down both individually and together with an objective third party. Another person might help you draw a different perspective on the problem, which could be all it takes to come to a solution that can be accepted by both parties. Be a Good Listener Oftentimes conflicts can be avoided or solved rather quickly if each party would take the time to fully listen to what the other party has to say rather than having to express their opinion first and then occupy their mind by thinking of what else they want to say. Its also important to go into any kind of negotiations with a clear mind and avoid any preconceived noti ons. The communication should always be respectful and both parties should work to make the other person feel heard. Maintain a Win-Win Attitude Even though two people may be in conflict, they may still be very much in sync on what theyd both like to see happen. When something ends up being a win-win for both parties, the result is usually a sense of goodwill and a strong feeling of accomplishment. Working through a problem and coming up with a win-win situation for everyone really can help to make a working relationship stronger and benefits both parties.

Get Companies to Chase You by Totally Changing Your Cover Letter
Get Companies to Chase You by Totally Changing Your Cover Letter Get Companies to Chase You by Totally Changing Your Cover Letter As you probablyknow by now, Im not a fan of the wait-and-see game that is, pinging your resumeto ajob site or acompany and waiting to see if someone isinterested in you. This tactic takes control of your job search fromyou and puts it in other peopleshands. Thisstrategy is one way of doing things but itsthe old-school way There are many other ways to find a job, but today Im going to share one way in particular with you. Its a way that is all about- you becoming visible- you getting the job you want- and you taking back control of your job search so that companies chase after you.How toTake Back Control of Your Job SearchThere is more than one way to skin a cat please note thatI love cats, but Im sure you get what I mean but heres one step you can taketo gain control of your job search. Its a completely new spin on the traditional titel letter.I call i t the Show Tell Letter. The Show Tell Letter is all about monetizing yourself. Its about taking proactive action. The Show Tell Letter isabout showinga hiring manager that you understand their issues andtelling them that you are the solution to their problems. (Remember You only get hired because they have a problem.)Writing a Show Tell LetterThere are four steps to creating the perfect Show Tell LetterThe BaitProblem IdentificationProblem SolvingClosing1.The Bait Draw the hiring manager in by showing an interest in the company. Do some research, read trade magazines, conduct a Google search. The point is to find something new about the company a recent industry award, a new product launch, or a new process development. In your letter, you shouldpraise the person or company for the achievements you have uncovered. People love to receive credit, and this will encourage them to read on.2. Problem IdentificationDuring yourresearch, you also want to find something that may be keeping the manager you are writing to up at night. This is not about telling them how to do their job its about identifying with their problem. For example, maybe the managerworks fora startup company and is trying to get the word out about their products or services. You can say that you understand how challenging their situation must be, with staff members wearing so many hats and working around the clock to develop and implement marketing strategies.3. Problem SolvingUse a couple of sentences to provide evidence of how you can solve the problem you identified. Use a practical example of a time when you have achieved a similar result for another company. Do not go into elaborate detail you can save that for the interview. Just state the facts about how you fixed the issue.4. ClosingThis needs to be short and sweet. A simple sentence saying you would love to chat about how you can achieve thesaatkorn results for them is enough. You can sendyour resume along withthe letter, but do not refe r to it in the letter. Your resume is justthere to provide additional information about you. The Show Tell Letter is not a placeto talk about yourself it is a place to talk about your potential employers problem.Once youve sent your first Show TellLetter off, its time to start compiling a list of other companies that you could send a similar letter to. Do your research and start all over again. Dont stop until companies start chasing youBe Proactive Own Your Job SearchImagine sending a Show TellLetter to ahiring manager not the HR person, but the person who needs you and can hire you. 3 things you must do now to land a job in 2014
3 things you must do now to land a job in 20143 things you must do now to land a job in 2014Jump-departure your New Years career resolution with these three steps. The New Year is traditionally a time to reflect on last years accomplishments and personal growth. But more importantly, it is a great time to make plans and goals to enhance your life in the future. If your goal includes moving up in your career, here are three of the first steps you need to take to get noticed by potential employers and help you get a fresh professional start in 2014.1. Revamp your resume. Now is a great time to review your resume and highlight key accomplishments from the previous year. Take a close look at job descriptions for your dream job and figure out what employers are looking for in an ideal candidate. Note the qualifications you meet and include them in your resume. Articulate everything that makes you a top candidate for your desired position. Also work on your resume format. Many times, the firs t thing an employer is negatively drawn to is something different or quirky in your resume layout. Make sure your resume is organized and consistent so your information shines through not the formatting.2. Take advantage of social media. If you havent yet, now is the time to gain an online presence. As a recruiter, I am constantly checking various social media channels for my next hires. You want to paint a positive picture of who you are and who you wish employers to see you as. Take some time in the New Year to research social media channels and choose which are right for you.Build a LinkedIn profile, or revamp the one you already have. Adjusting a piece of information in your profile immediately alerts your followers to the change and brings you back into the public eye. Add to your connections list. Research your friends in the areas you wish to work in and request to follow them and their peers. The more exposure you get, the more likely an employer is to contact you or an empl oyee to refer you.3. Join networking groups.Networking is one of the best ways to get yourself out there and meet new people. There are many different networking groups you can join that are specific to your career, or the one you wish to be in. One option to try is Meetup a fairly new company that organizes events based on shared interests. They have groups that span nearly every industry. Through networking, you can learn the pros and cons of a job or industry. Making connections can be nerve-racking, so feel free to bring a more social friend to network with youFollow these three guidelines to set yourself up for success in the New Year and watch your resolution become reality. Choosing a career path passion or pragmatism
Choosing a career path passion or pragmatism Choosing A Career Path Passion Or Pragmatism?Posted June 18, 2015, by Josie ChunAre you one of those people whos always known what you want to do when you grow up like become a doctor, policeman or vet? Whose childhood passion for writing stories or playing with Lego naturally and inevitably led to a career in journalism or industrial engineering? Well if thats you, count yourself amongst the lucky few. For the rest of us, figuring out what to do with our lives can be a confusing business. There are so many options and so many considerations do you follow your heart and choose a career based on your passions and interests, or do you follow your head and choose a practical job that offers great career and salary prospects? Passion and pragmatism are not mutually exclusive, of course, but sometimes it does come down to a difficult choice. Choosing the path of creative fulfilment and pursuing your dream of becoming the next Cate Blanchet t or great Australian novelist can involve risk and sacrifice just ask the waiter at your local caf.Or just ask comedian Wil Anderson, who understands ansicht sacrifices well. The first year I did stand-up I made $4000, and the second year I made $6000. I was making less than the dole so it wasnt a glorious existence at that point. I never saw a movie that wasnt on a Tuesday, ate a lot of two-minute noodles and drank a lot of cheap wine, but I dont think Ive ever had more fun.Part-time passionSome people are happy to indulge their passions in their leisure time, while maintaining a day job to keep the income rolling in. Michael has worked in the banking industry for many years while indulging his passion for writing during his leisure time. Now, however, he is at the point where he is ready to give up his day job entirely so he can write full time but that is a luxury afforded by his years of hard work in the financial sector. I now feel I want to devote solid time to my writi ng if Im going to be serious about it as more than just a hobby. My thinking now is that you have to follow your passion when it comes to careers, and now I have the means to be able to give more attention and focus to it, says Michael.Following your blissLets face it if you decide to pursue a career you dont enjoy simply because of practical considerations or parental expectations, youre setting yourself up for future unhappiness or a mid-career crisis. Wil Anderson knows this well too. I ended up doing journalism at university because it seemed like a good way to still be involved with writing and, unlike comedy, it also seemed like something you could actually do as a job. I did that for three years and absolutely hated every minute of it. I was very successful at it, but none of that success brought me any happiness so I thought maybe I should do something that made me happy, whether I was successful at it or not. Passion usually breeds success, but following your bliss invo lves weighing up risks and overcoming your fears, as well as creating contingency plans. This is a process actor and comedian Glenn Robbins, aka Kel Knight from Kath and Kim, had to work through as well I was working at an insurance company when I realised I seriously wanted to pursue acting as a career. I remember being in the office and looking around at all the people who had been there for about 10 years and they didnt look very happy. Its good that I worked in that industry for a while because it made me realise what I really wanted to do, which was to act. So being the conservative person that I am, I enrolled in a drama teaching course at Melbourne State College. This meant that I could pursue acting but would also have a career in teaching to fall back on in case it didnt work out, says Robbins.Choosing a career pathIf youre trying to figure out what career path to take, you have a few things to consider. First of all, think about what activities you really enjoy. What a re your interests, strengths and values, and what are you really good at? Knowing your personal brand will help you evaluate what would be fruchtwein important to you in a job would it be having creativity or autonomy, or opportunities to travel? Now brainstorm jobs that could be related to the things on your list and enlist the aid of family and friends to help you come up with ideas. Try to find out as much as you can about the jobs and industries that interest you research online and at libraries, read related news and trade magazines, talk to your family, contacts and industry professionals, attend career and trade fairs, and keep an eye on job advertisements for job descriptions. Consider working part-time, or as an intern or volunteer to get a better idea of whats involved and whether youd like to pursue this as a career. In addition to your own level of interest, the factors you will need to weigh up will include what the job market is like, salary, potential career pro gression, stability, hours, work-life balance, location, and whether you will need to move or travel. You also need to find out if you will need specific qualifications to nab the job of your dreams. You could also consider talking to a career counsellor or coach for extra guidance.Think large, and think laterally. You dont have to stick to the tried-and-true paths of accounting, business or law. If your true passion is health or youve always really wanted to be a teacher or web developer, then figure out what qualifications you need, and go for itSometimes the only way to find out if you like a job is simply to give it a go but be prepared to move on if you find its not the right one for you. After all, most people change career paths three to five times during their lifetime, so changing your professional direction is not unusual and can make for an interesting and stimulating journey. Gabrielle Gawne-Kelnar was working as a successful photographer before deciding to return to study and practise as a counsellor. Gabrielles advice to anyone considering career paths is to ask yourself What is it that youre seeking? Get really clear on your vision and just be really brave in looking at all the possible alternatives that might enable you to achieve your vision. Courage is key just try something out and youll see that it can really work. How did you choose your career path? Was your decision based on passion or pragmatism? Former Goldman exec says best thing he did in his career paid off big
Former Goldman exec says best thing he did in his career paid off bigFormer Goldman exec says best thing he did in his career paid off bigYouve heard it 1,000 times 80% of success is showing up. The quote is often attributed to Woody Allen, in an interview after his breakout 1977 hit, Annie Hall. By now, the comment has almost become a cliche. For Marc Spilker, work ethic, and fostering a reputation for getting things done, is actually an explanation for his success. Spilker, a former Goldman Sachs partner whos now chairman of a small but fast-growing asset manager, said its the single best thing he did to get ahead during a 30-year Wall Street career. If you look at the industry I grew up in, theres notlage a big diversity in terms of raw intelligence of the people, yet some do wildly well and some dont, Spilker said in an interview with Business Insider. Theres always a little bit of luck, but work ethic is way more important than people think. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Spilker joined a derivatives trading house in Chicago named OConnor. It welches the late 1980s, just as global stock and bond markets were beginning a meteoric expansion. As a young trader, Spilker signed up for unpopular work shifts in order to gain experience and soon gained a reputation for efficiently executing on the projects he was assigned, he said.I was willing to work the Japan shift from Chicago - come into the office at 6 oclock at night and work through the night, Spilker said. I was willing to work the London shift, come to the office at midnight and work through breakfast the next morning. To me it was like, the more you work, the more you learn. The more you learn, the better you were. The better you were, the more opportunities you saw, and back to this virtuous cycle. After a few years at OConnor, Spilker joined Goldman Sachs. In 20 years at the Wall Street firm, he rose to co-head of its asset-management arm with a key position on the firms powerful m anagement committee. In 2010, Spilker left for Apollo Management, where as president he helped the private-equity firm sells share to public. Spilker later founded GPS Investment Partners with two ex-Goldman colleagues and together they built Chiron Investment Management, a manager of $2.7 billion where hes chairman.Over many years, Spilker said he got opportunities to work on cool projects and earn promotions by establishing a reputation as someone who could get stuff done. It was all part of building his personal brand and showing his colleagues that he could be trusted to finish the job, he said. You want to be in a position to see opportunities as they come up, he said. If you have a brand, a personal brand, known for being somebody that will do excellent work but will actually get the work done, then youre more likely to see the opportunities than others. And thats the best thing you can have happen in your career. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

What Counts as Relevant Career Experience
What Counts as Relevant Career ExperienceWhat Counts as Relevant Career ExperienceJob seekers often think if they havent held a full-time position in a certain industry that they will be rejected as unqualified for that discipline. It pays to remember, though, that relevant career experience comes in a variety of forms. What matters is being able to demonstrate to employers how your background and attributes set you up to be successful in a given role.Show hiring managers that your past accomplishments match their needs by pointing out these relevant career experiencesVolunteer WorkThe lack of a paycheck does bedrngnis discount your efforts. In fact, providing services for free reveals much about your character as well as your interest in utilizing and developing certain skills. Impress an employer looking for an exceptional communicator with stories about grant writing for a nonprofit, or use your experience as a Sunday school teacher as proof of your passion for working with childr en.InternshipsNo longer just for college kids, many seasoned workers take an internship in a new field to gain knowledge and experience. Again, employers are much more interested in what you learned, not what you earned, and how it pertains to the job at hand.Part-Time or Freelance WorkThe route to full-time employment often starts with demonstrated ability in another capacity. The part-time help desk position you held while raising young children definitely has bearing on your candidacy for a 40-hour-per-week customer service job now that they are older. Likewise, someone who has designed websites on a freelance basis certainly can use those samples as proof of competency when seeking a traditional position in a digital marketing department.Transferable Skills from Past EmploymentWhile nobody can expect to get hired as a surgeon without completing very specific training, many abilities a rolle develops in one job can be applied to roles in a different area. Evaluate your so-called transferable skills, and chances are youll discover a great deal of experience new employers will find attractive.Probably the most important aspect of crossing from one position to another is that you- the job candidate- think in terms not of what your past position WAS, but what it was that YOU brought to that position, and how your skills translate to a new position, says Alan Guinn, managing director ofThe Guinn Consultancy Group, Inc.For instance, if you have a proven track record of effectively managing a team of 20 in the insurance industry, chances are youll be equally capable of leading a similar-sized group at a nonprofit. Similarly, talent in areas such as project management, negotiation, sales, customer relations, and communication are valued across many fields.Dont rely on the hiring manager, though, to make the connection. Highlight your transferable skills as relevant work experience to create a clear picture of why youre the right candidate for the job.Readers, are y ou surprised to learn about which of your experiences count as relevant career experience? What will you add to your resume as a result?

Information About Advertising Careers
Information About Advertising CareersInformation About Advertising CareersWhether youre still in school and ready to launch your advertising career, or youre looking to switch professions, you need to know exactly what to expect, and that can vary greatly depending upon what role you want to fulfill in an agency and which area of advertising you want to work in. Location can be a defining factor too. Account Side vs. Creative Department Before you get into advertising, you have to decide what you want to do when you get to an agency. In general, there are two roads to take - creative or accounts. This is, of course, a massive generalization there are many roles not even covered by those descriptions. A typical advertising agency structure includes, but is not limited to, the following key roles species DirectorAccount Executive/SupervisorAccount PlannerCopywriterProduction DesignerProduction DirectorMedia Buyer/PlannerCreative DirectorWeb DesignerTraffic Manager Say Goodbye to Regular 9 to 5 Hours All too often, inspired advertising is not produced in a traditional working week. Be prepared for long nights, weekends and a whole lot of rejection. The creative work is the heart and soul of any ad agency. Its the product. Which means it has to be great work. Its also subjective, so a great idea to one person is a complete head-scratcher to another. That means that, unlike an accountant, there are no right or wrong answers. You are at the whim of the creative director, who is at the whim of the client. The Client is Always Right Something you will discover very quickly is that money is power in advertising. With the exception of the powerhouse ad agencies (Crispin, Porter Bogusky, Weiden Kennedy, TBWAChiatDay) the clients have all the money and most of the power. So, be prepared to have your 120 creative ideas flushed down the toilet in favor of a Frankensteins monster of an ad that the client designed with his or her daughter and the babysitter. S mart Creatives Are Highly-Prized Possessions You have the ideas that make the agency successful, and thus, you will be treated like a king when you get it right. Keep doing it for a few decades, and you will one day have your name on the door of the agency, joining the ranks of Bill Bernbach, Tim Delaney, David Abbott, Leo Burnett and many more. Work hard, and you can carve your name into the advertising history books and earn a handsome living doing it. The Roles of the Account Teams On the other side of the coin, working in accounts has its ups and downs as well. Despite what you want to hear, you are there to serve the creative work. Heres just a short list of what various account service roles entail Expect to work equally long hours as the creativesBe prepared to fight for work that you may not agree withKnow how to formulate a solid strategyLearn to service the client without giving in to every requestBalance a budget and meet firm deadlinesPresent work, often several tim esWork closely with the creative directorBe a diplomatAssist with production of TV and video shoots Knowing When to Say Yes or No You have a client to satisfy, and will often be caught between the two worlds. If you work for an ad agency that values great work above billings, you will be fine. If you work for an agency concerned only with the bottom line, expect to get your head bitten off regularly by the frustrated creatives who see their work limping back to the agency as a shadow of its former self. Go Beyond the Walls of the Agency Theres more to life in advertising than just doing the work. Advertising is part of pop culture, and to be good at it you have to immerse yourself in it. Which means that, as a good ad agency employee, you will involve yourself in many extra-curricular activities that expand your mind and your horizons. You should Take vacations that expand your mindRead interesting and diverse books, magazines, ?and blogsSee more than the usual moviesGo to t he theaterWrite a blogRead newspapers and magazines outside of the industryTake up some interesting hobbies A well-furnished mind is a good advertising brain. The best agencies will expect you to fill yours with experiences that will benefit the work, so if youre a social wallflower, advertising is not for you. Its mora About Working Hard Than Playing Hard When it comes to the decadence and debauchery, saying that it doesnt happen anymore, anywhere, would be disingenuous. Dont expect to lead the life of a rock-star by working in advertising. While its true that a certain amount of exuberance and decadence used to proliferate the profession (Mad Men is one such example), it has all but vanished since the stock market collapse of the late eighties. These days, just like any other profession, its all about working hard and making money. Keep your head down, and its a fantastic and rewarding career that can take you all around the world.
